The Wings of Hope Memorial Golf Tournament is pleased to announce the 2017 Tributes are David Tramontana and Walter Kropkowski.
My name is David Tramontana. I am a husband, father, teacher, and cancer survivor. In February of this year, after months of monitoring a goiter and nodules on my thyroid, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer that aggressively spread to my lymph nodes. While my prognosis was good, there were some aspects of my situation that made surgery risky and more in depth. The diagnosis came as a shock to me and my family. I was immediately referred to the ENT Cancer team at University of Maryland.
Since my diagnosis, I have had a full thyroidectomy as well as approximately 39 lymph nodes removed. I also received radioactive iodine treatment. I am happy to say that with the talent and persistence of my doctors, I am cancer free.
Sadly, I share this journey with my father, Tom, who passed away this past December from terminal brain cancer. While my prognosis was the best you could hope for, his was the worst. I know that if this is the way it had to be, this is what he would have wanted for me. I am blessed to be a survivor and humbled by those who fought the way my dad did. I felt his presence with me as I kissed my heartbroken wife and mother on my way to the operating room. I was surprisingly at ease, and felt he was there holding my hand.
I am grateful to God for blessing me with talented and persistent doctors; for friends who pray, cook, and text; for parents who love and support me with all they have; for siblings who love unconditionally; for four children who make me smile; and for an amazing wife who loves, supports, works and worries enough for the both of us, and who
allows me to heal in every way I need to.
Not every cancer diagnosis carries with it a death sentence. Every cancer is different. Every cancer is a journey and a challenge. For the many before me and who presently battle as my dad did, my heart hurts. My prayers are with you. I know that my life is blessed, but it will never be the same.
